If you've considered Affiliate Marketing for money, good for you. If you're considering joining eBay's Affiliate Program - Don't.

If you're burdened with credit card debt and looking for a way to repair your credit, you won't find it with ePN. Hoping to have a little extra spending money after filling the car with fuel? Don't join ePN. In fact, don't spend your money buying anything on eBay. Hell, you're better off finding a free auction site, like the one provided in Northeast PA and the Pocono mountains, as reported in the newspaper serving the area. With the antics eBay is pulling, more such sites by disgruntled affiliates is sure to follow, for many are adept developers, as well as affiliates.

In one of the bloodiest mass executions to take place digitally, in the cyber world of affiliate marketing, ePN, eBay's new in-house affiliate program, has eliminated hundreds (possibly thousands) of affiliates in one single swoop of the axe.

Why would ePN (eBay) kill off their young? Simple corporate greed. Their stock is tanking, their business model has lost focus since aquiring new management, and they believe this influx of cash (not having to share with affiliates) will give them new life. They believe that since they are now such a household name they don't need affiliates and worse, they are trying to become something they can never be - an Amazon.com type site. It's getting to the point that with a free adsense book, Adsense sites can do better.

They are shooting themselves in the foot. Among their victims is a motorcycle site that ranked #2 in Google. Having sent ebay over 600,000 visitors in 1 year and earning, both the site and eBay, six figures each. eBay (ePN) doesn't have many body parts remaining to shoot, already having made blunders that resulted in a failing corporation. Soon they will only have their head to put a bullet into.

On August 20th, 2008, an undisclosed number of affiliates were sent the following template letter:

"Dear (Affiliate),

During a recent review of eBay Partner Network publisher accounts and site metrics data for clicks your account drives to eBay.com, we determined that the traffic generated from your account is significantly less engaged with the eBay site as compared to the standards set by our other affiliates. While we appreciate your efforts to drive traffic to our Advertiser sites, we do not think that it is mutually beneficial to further our business relationship at this time. As a result, we will be expiring your eBay Partner Network account in 7 days and we request that you remove all of your eBay Partner Network affiliate links by that time. Payment will take place as per the Network Agreement for any traffic driven to eBay Advertiser sites prior to the expiration date of August 27, 2008.

One of our account managers will contact you if a more appropriate business opportunity arises to work together again in the future.

Regards,

The eBay Partner Network"

This occurred approximately 2 weeks after a similar letter was sent to affiliates dropping them then, but was soon retracted, as a "gllitch" for those that asked for a review.

When looking at the terminology used, it is obviously written by an attorney. It is so non-specific, that it is not understandable in order to correct any problem that might have existed for the affiliate.

"Less engaged?" What the hell does that mean? The affiliates job is to steer a visitor toward the site. It's the sites (eBay) responsibility to "engage" them.

"Metrix data?" They don't even say what data they used to make a determination, claiming "black hatters" will use the knowledge to their advantage. Excuse me while I put on a pair of waders.

"Standards set by other affiliates?" There is nothing in the agreement regarding standards, nor have any standards been published - and what are those standards, that were set by other affiliates? They were never shown.

In this latest en masse removal of their bread and butter, it seems there will be no reversal, as this template letter is returned to those who request a review:

"Dear (Affiliate),

Thank you for your message.

Our goal in affiliate marketing is to allocate our resources to best drive incremental demand to our sellers. We have been analyzing our program closely over the last few months. In addition to looking at earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we’ve done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources.

As a result, we have asked a small subset of affiliates to stop sending traffic to eBay. We understand that these actions do have a very real impact on some of you who have been working with us over the years. For that, we sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate program. We also want to clarify that you are not being asked to stop sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the terms of service. You will get paid for all the valid traffic sent to date, and for the next 7 days.

At this time, we unfortunately cannot reconsider our decision on your account. We will contact you again if we see an opportunity to work together again in the future.

eBay.com Affiliate Team"

For an entire day the ePN Forum continued to accumulate with angry ex-members looking for a Rep to give some clue, as to "Why?" they were booted out of the affiliate program. Some of them bringing eBay 5 and 6 figures per year in income.

Their response came on the evening of August 21st:

steveh@ebay.com Aug-21-08 16:50 PDT I wanted to address all of the board posts regarding the expiration emails that were sent last night.

These actions were part of our continued effort to focus on delivering the highest quality buyer traffic to eBay via affiliate marketing. To that end, we’ve been analyzing our program closely over the last few months. I know there have been a number of requests to provide insight into all of the metrics via which we are evaluating affiliate traffic, but unfortunately there’s an active black hat community that is pretty effective at exploiting these insights so we can’t go into details on them. However, what I can say is that in addition to earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we’ve done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources.

Our responsibility in the affiliate marketing channel is to allocate our resources to best drive incremental demand to our sellers. To that end, we need to focus on partners who have had the most success in engaging users who become some of our best buyers on eBay. I understand that these actions do have a very real impact on some of our affiliates who have been working with us over the years. For that, I sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate program.

We want to be very clear. Affiliates who received these messages of expiration last night are not being asked to stop sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the terms of service. For those of you who received the message, commissions are not being reversed, and you will be paid for all valid traffic you have sent to us to date, and for the next 7 days.

Sincerely,

Steve

It is now the general mindset of affiliates, even those who weren't axed, to re-invent our wheel and revamp our sites, driving retail business away from eBay to a more trustworthy publisher who appreciates the many, many millions of dollars in revenue we point to them. Why would those who weren't axed want to leave? Basically, it's pain relief by not having worries. Because we have lost faith and trust in eBay and the in-house program that has been trouble from the day the fox started watching the hen house. None of us wants to go to bed at night wondering if we are going to find a letter of dismissal in the morning, because some algorithm program made it so.

Do not join ePN! It's suicide - eventually.

Good post I wrote an article on my site yesterday, using the same suicide analogy. I really believe this is the killer round for ebay. I sat through previous ebay changes, and while they annoyed me and cut into profit each time, it was bareable. But this time, they announced A Final Value Fee raise up to 15% of total sell price, a huge increase, and then at the same time start mass executing the very people that send traffic to ebay. It's nuts. Really I can't think of a more efficient means for a company to commit virtual suicide than this. It's a good thing they bought all those other companies along the way, as ebay sure isn't going to be the player it is today in a couple of years.

I agree with you that this is a dumb move buy Ebay . Americans do not tolerate corporations that hurt people. This has caused many affiliates their main income source. I am starting a site to warn Ebay investors i will post it when its up. Good Article . All we can do now is to make the investors aware of the Ebay practices and bad management model.

Thanks for the supportive comments. As an affiliate that hasn't gotten the knife in my back (yet), this just makes me so angry. It's scary to see the people they are cutting loose, that have been honest affiliates for years. I count on my affiliate money and worked hard to get where I'm at. I don't know if enough bad press will shame them (I doubt it) into reconsidering their position, but they unleashed a whole bunch of mad dogs that are going to chew them up by sending traffic elsewhere with well established sites they have. The eBay "leadership" is just plain retarded.

Tommy 3 years ago

I agree with Shawn "ebay sure isn't going to be the player it is today in a couple of years. "

eBay is already down 36.8 million unique U.S.visitors per month according to Quantcast stats. April 2007 101.4 million - July 2008 64.6 million. Dowm 36%. Can it all be bllmed on the economy? I think not. Let's keep an eye out and see if they drop further as they continue cutting honest affliates, raising fess and switch to a fixed price sales format.

HUBBERS BEWARE - This is the end for your eBay's earnings.

Ebay seems to be messed up. They will not allow me to sign in to my account for some reason. I think their system is all messed up. For instance, I got an e-mail telling me that my listing to sell something was being taken off. The only thing is --- I NEVER put anything up like that for sale! Something is rotten on Ebay, for sure!

Thank you for publishing this well-written report here on HubPages. Since I don't keep up with eBay forums as much as I should, I don't know when I would have seen the news of this shocking action on the part of eBay.

I've stopped developing my portfolio full stop, just see no real purpose in sending traffic to eBay, for over 3 weeks now I've not received one cent in commission payments despite thousands of visitors travelling through my portfolio of sites to eBay. This corporation is nothing more than a bunch of low life lying thieves and scoundrels who would rob a poor man blind.

Chris 3 years ago

We are also a victim of their tactics. Let's organize and sue these <insert your favorite insult>.

ePNsucks Hub Author 3 years ago

Yes. Probably the worst corporate decision made in recent memory. Not only have they removed money makers, but those who remain are too scared to change anything on their sites to better promote them. We don't want to trigger that unknown metric that may get us killed off, so we do absolutely nothing, which means the income will eventually fall off as the sites look stagnant to visitors.

eBay really screwed the pooch this time.

ebay and paypal is nothing like it used to be. They have quickly become one of the biggest rip offs on the internet in every aspect of thier business.

Thanks for suggestion I will consider your points.

intouchwebpro 3 years ago

Let's hope the final ax falls on eBay and gets rid of the headache altogether.

My experience is that they are a total ripoff in general. I am more than happy to point my people to a caring organization that truly cares about their affiliates and doesn't feel they have to come up with some BS story. We need to represent an organization that believes in honesty, not dishonesty.

intouchwebpro 3 years ago

Oh yeah, since eBay owns PayPal I suggest that every merchant signed on to them resign. I would like to see them bankrupt and crawling back in the gutter where they came from. They are also one of the biggest ripoffs with their exhorbant fees and do not back their merchants as they would have everyone believe. They helped a scammer totally ruin my business. Now I am seeking legal action against them to help me recover the $3000 plus I was scammed out of and they are trying to make me look like the bad guy. Let's put eBay and PayPal both out of business by giving our referrals to a deserving company that cares about their affiliates.

Hi I'm new to Hubpages, so this means I mustn't bother with setting ebay affiliate settings then?

We are sitting down with our lawyers today. From what I heard so far there are plenty of reaons for a class action suit.

i'll say i don't make nearly the revenue since it switched from cj to ep, but it's better than nothing. I also do not like the new teir setting for acru's (ie the more traffic the more money you earn) it's like 1-34 or something. i forget, but i'm still staying, only because i do get a few bucks each month. :-/ Just wish it was a lot more like with cj.

I really think ebay should have tested a little longer before making it public. there are WAY too many glitches.

Thanks for the heads up. It seems likte they are kicking out a lot of the people that brought them profits. I signed up for Ebay Affiliates last month and haven't earned anything yet. But I still haven't been sent away. I can't see the point if someone buys something from Ebay through an affiliate it seems well worth it for Ebay to pay the affiliate. Well if I get the axe I would definitely try my best to send traffic away similar to you. For now I will just leave what I have in place and not put anymore effort into them. Because I would never know when I could be dropped.

Tom 3 years ago

Yep, eBay is cracking down on incentivized signups.

ePNsucks Hub Author 3 years ago

If it were only a case of cracking down on signups due to incentive offerings. It is, in fact, an attempt by eBay to try and improve their bottom line by stealing affiliates customer base. Someone at ePN thinks affiliates are supposed to not only steer traffic to eBay, but to make the sale for eBay, as well. Steve-o at ePN is a college grad with no common sense, nor does he have a clue about how affiliate marketing works.

Its very nice information about ebay. Great hub and thanks for sharing the valuable information with us.

ePNsucks Hub Author 3 years ago

If anyone knew the metrics they actually used to determine who gets the boot, it might be known why. Maybe your not making enough to bother with or you're so far under the radar, they haven't seen you yet. It seems to many that their determinations to expire people are arbitrary and without standards. High earners, low earners, high EPC or low EPC rates, new affiliates or old affiliates. All have been expired equally. No rhyme or reason to it.

The Devil's Advocate 2 years ago

In sharp contrast to the rest of your comments, I've had nothing but great experiences with eBay over the past few months, despite using all sorts of underhanded means of driving traffic.Oh well, I suppose it will come to an end at some point. But for now, EPN is alright in my book.

Harold 2 years ago

After August, when ePN closed my account eBay stocks dropped 61%. I was making around $3,000/mo with eBay, and when they closed my account without any explanation I had to redo my website trying to survive.

I did that... and today, without changing my products, I am making about $5,000/mo using other affiliate programs. I am glad I am not depending on eBay anymore, and happy to see them falling apart.

They made really bad decisions and will pay the price.

ePNsucks Hub Author 2 years ago

@ Devil's Advocate

And with this new QCP payout plan? How do you like them now?

They SUCK WORSE THAN BEFORE!

Kia 2 years ago

It finally happened to me I got the AXE a few days ago and now my account is locked out, my traffic was not good enough for them I was making about 200 a month, I just got rid of all my ebay links and now I will concentrate on Amazon and google adsense. Its there lost I made them thousands for the past few years.
